SHELXL in windows 7

You've heard of the obscure little used program called Shelx? Well feel free to share your Shelx questions, in all forms XL, WinGX versions, Shelx versions, we take the lot and then your wondering what about general commands yep those and Shelx related issues, ideas, troubleshooting and of course general Shelx related hocus-pocus. Just post away - remember though:
Q2: When I start SHELXL on my PC the disk rattles loudly for several hours and smoke comes out of the back. Is this a bug?
A: You must be trying to run SHELX under some version of Windows! The best solution is to reformat the hard disk and install Linux. However the current release should produce less smoke.

Do you refer to the SHELX executables themselves or to the Bruker SHELXTL package?

I do not have SHELXTL (distributed by Bruker), but shelxl and shelxs (which you get from George and are free for academic users) work just fine under Windows 7 x64...

don't have win7 but in XP and Vista you can set environment variables it in: control panel -> system -> advanced -> Environment Variables -> new

if you use shelxl and shelxs only, place both files in a folder where the PATH environment variable points to.

I have never refined a crystal. How is that done?

As for the SHELX executables, they need to reside in a directory that is in the path. That is the only requirement. SHELXL should run fine under any OS.

The error message you prompted asks for the SXTL environment variable, but you said you were trying to use the SHELX executables. That is a contradiction. The SHELXTL software will not work on Windows 7 computers, the SHELX suite will. Do you know the difference?

Cheers,

Peter

It is the same in Windows 7. I have Windows 7 on three computers now and had to set quite a few system variables and environment variables.

Yes, the error message in the screenshot looks like SHELXTL.

In so far SHELXTL is concerned, please take a look:

Hi peterkd,

1. you can check the entries in the PATH environment variable: control panel -> system -> advanced -> Environment Variables -> click on PATH -> edit
or since you run the programs from the command prompt anyway, type "path" and you get a list

2. move shelxl.exe and shelxs.exe in any of the listed directories

Hi,

I do have the same problem with window 7. I already put the shelxl.exe and shelxs.exe to directories listed in path but still it does not work.

It says that it is not running because I have a 64-bit system. What can I do to run shelxl and shelxs in a 64 bit system?

thanks
